“Every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” — John 15:2 (ESV)
We often ask God for growth. We pray for new opportunities, deeper faith and greater purpose. But sometimes the answer to that prayer begins with God removing something rather than adding something.
Jesus tells us that even fruitful branches are pruned. Not because they have failed, but because there is more fruit still to come.
There may be habits, distractions, attitudes or even seasons of our lives that once had a purpose but are no longer helping us become who God is calling us to be. Letting go can be uncomfortable, particularly when we do not yet understand what God is making room for.
Spring gives us a beautiful reminder of this. New growth appears because the plant continues drawing life from its source. For us, that source is Christ.
Jesus later says, “Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit.” — John 15:5 (ESV)
Perhaps today God isn’t asking you to do more. Perhaps He is asking you to remain close to Him and allow Him to remove what is getting in the way.
Don’t fear the pruning. God may be making room for something new to grow.
Prayer: Lord, help me remain close to You and trust You with every season of my life. Show me anything that needs to be surrendered, and give me the courage to let it go. Prune what needs pruning, strengthen what remains, and let my life produce fruit that brings glory to You. Amen.
