When We Fall Short

When We Fall Short

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)

Most of us want to get it right. We want to say the right thing, make the right decision, respond with patience, remain faithful, and become the person God is calling us to be. We try. Sometimes we try incredibly hard. And yet there are still days when we fall short.

We lose our patience. We make a poor decision. We allow fear to speak louder than faith. We say something we wish we could take back. We promise ourselves that we will do better, only to discover that we are still imperfect people learning how to follow a perfect Saviour.

The danger is that we can begin to believe God is disappointed with us because we are disappointed with ourselves. We look at our failures and think we should be further along by now. But God never asked us to become perfect through our own effort. He invited us to walk with Him and allow His grace to keep transforming us.

Paul understood this. He asked God to remove something that continually reminded him of his weakness, but instead God told him, “My grace is sufficient for you.” God did not tell Paul that weakness did not matter. He showed him that weakness did not disqualify him. In fact, it became a place where Paul learned to depend more deeply upon Christ.

There is an important difference between pursuing holiness and pursuing perfectionism. Holiness draws us toward Jesus. Perfectionism keeps our attention fixed on ourselves. Holiness says, “Lord, keep changing me.” Perfectionism says, “I should have fixed myself by now.”

Perhaps today you are carrying something you wish you had done differently. Bring it to Jesus. Confess what needs to be confessed. Apologise where an apology is needed. Learn what God is teaching you. Then receive His grace and keep walking.

You will not always get everything right. You will stumble. You will have moments when the person you are does not yet look like the person you are becoming. But God is not finished with you.

Christian maturity is not reaching the point where we never fail. It is learning where to go when we do.

Prayer:
Father, I want to honour You with my life, but I know I will sometimes fall short. Forgive me when I fail, teach me through my mistakes, and protect me from believing that I must earn Your love through perfection. Help me pursue You rather than an impossible version of myself. Thank You that Your grace is sufficient for me and that You continue Your work in me, even through my weakness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
