You Don’t Have to Solve Tomorrow

You Don’t Have to Solve Tomorrow

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
Matthew 6:34 (ESV)

My mind has a habit of arriving in tomorrow before I do.

It runs conversations that have not happened yet. It works through problems that may never exist. It plans responses to questions nobody has asked and tries to prepare for outcomes that are still only possibilities.

Sometimes I can spend so much time mentally living in tomorrow that I barely notice today.

There is nothing wrong with planning. Wisdom prepares. Responsibility thinks ahead. But there is a difference between preparing for tomorrow and trying to control it.

Jesus never tells us that tomorrow will be easy. In fact, His words are surprisingly realistic: tomorrow will have trouble of its own. What He does tell us is that we do not need to carry tomorrow’s trouble today.

That distinction matters.

God has given me grace for this day.

He has given me enough strength for the conversation in front of me, enough wisdom for the decision I actually need to make, enough mercy for today’s failures and enough presence for today’s uncertainty.

But when I drag tomorrow into today, I begin carrying things God has not yet asked me to carry.

I try to solve situations before they exist.

I imagine every possible outcome.

I rehearse what I will say, what they might say, what could go wrong and what I will do if it does.

And somewhere in all that mental preparation, I can forget something very simple.

God will be there tomorrow too.

I do not need to mentally travel ahead to make sure everything is ready.

He is already there.

The God who meets me this morning will still be God when tomorrow arrives. The grace that is sufficient today will be sufficient then. The wisdom I do not yet have can be given when I actually need it.

Perhaps faith sometimes looks less like having confidence about everything that is coming and more like refusing to live somewhere God has not asked us to live yet.

Today has enough in it.

There are people to love today.

There is work to do today.

There are moments with God available today.

There is grace available today.

Tomorrow will come soon enough.

And when it does, God will meet me there.

Prayer

Father, my mind so easily runs ahead of me. I try to prepare for things that have not happened and solve problems that may never come. Teach me to live faithfully in the day You have given me. Give me wisdom to prepare where I need to prepare, but help me recognise when preparation has become an attempt to control what I cannot control. Bring me back to today, and remind me that wherever tomorrow takes me, I will not arrive there before You.

Amen.
